In an effort to lure trade and investment and strengthen bilateral relations with international partners, Mpumalanga yesterday entered into a memorandum of understanding with China's Chonqing province.
Key areas of cooperation include community agriculture, education, human resources development and the strengthening business-to-business partnerships.
Accompanied by education MEC Mmathulare Coleman, public works MEC Madala Masuku and Craig Padayachee of economic development and planning, premier Thabang Makwetla also held bilateral talks with Chongqing government officials to look at other ways of strengthening relations between the two provinces.
The delegation also took part in celebrations relating to the 10th anniversary of South Africa-China diplomatic relations.
"This is part of ongoing efforts to lure trade and investments and strengthen bilateral relations between Mpumalanga and international partners," Makwetla said.
On Wednesday the delegation visited the Longxin Motorcycle Production Factory, where the two provinces explored ways of addressing transportation problems in the light of the coming 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Formal presentations by both provinces were tabled yesterday and the signing of the memorandum of understanding took place between Makwetla and the mayor of Chingqing, Wang hongju.
