A 45-year-old Soweto father was relieved by the 50percent cut in traffic fines because he already owes R4000 in fines.
"The concession is a huge relief seeing that we are approaching Christmas and the school fees await us at the beginning of next year," said Nhlanhla Mbatha, a subeditor at Sowetan.
He has accumulated traffic fines totalling R4000 in just a few months.
This week Mbatha stopped at a roadblock in Diepkloof to see how serious his sins were.
"I immediately paid R1000 and will pay the rest on Monday."
Most of Mbatha's fines are for speeding and crossing red traffic lights.
"I get a ticket almost every week. I don't pay them because I have a lot of responsibilities," he said.
Mbatha, a father of four school-going children, will now pay R1500, that is, if he makes a payment before the end of January next year.
