Caught off guard - this is the only explanation to describe the scenario when the Red Ants pounced on residents who were resisting eviction in Mmabatho yesterday.

More than 500 residents from GaTholo and adjacent flats had been keeping vigil outside their flats since Monday to protect their homes and belongings from the Red Ants.

But they let their guard down when the executive mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema, Themba Gwabeni, promised that the ANC leadership would protect them.

To prove his sincerity, he organised a braai for the tenants because their electricity was disconnected about three months ago. At about 5am, a strong contingent of men in red overalls invaded Ga-Tholo and nearby cottages, breaking doors and windows.

Furniture, clothes and other belongings were thrown into the street and some people were forcefully ejected from their homes still in their nightwear.
