The Limpopo Standing Committee on Partition and Public Participation has pressed criminal charges against Blouberg municipal manager Isaac Makhura.
Makhura faces charges of defeating the ends of justice, failing to honour a subpoena by the Limpopo legislature and intimidation.
He has allegedly failed to appear before the committee on several occasions when summoned to account for R32million that has been missing since 2002.
He is also accused of intimidating witnesses who were summoned to appear before the committee. He also faces charges of nepotism.
He allegedly appointed his brother to a senior position in the municipality. In the same week, he allegedly appointed two other men to senior positions in the municipality.
Polokwane police station spokesman Inspector Lesiba Ramoshaba has confirmed the charges against Makhura and said he would appear in court soon.
Makhura's troubles come after branches of the SA National Civics Organisation in Blouberg and in Capricorn district demanded an investigation into finances within the municipality.
"Our investigations discovered that a total of R29million had gone missing and that the municipality was unable to produce proof of the way the money was spent.
"We further discovered that no records were kept on how R736000 was spent. A further R10000 was allegedly spent on cellphones," said Hlengani Baloyi of Sanco.
Baloyi said Makhura was further unable to account for 150 bags of cement stolen from the municipality and the theft of R23000 which was withdrawn from municipal bank accounts between 2002 and 2003.
