Let us all go out of our way to hug a cop

Sowetan's editorial, Go out and hug a cop on October 24 - considering the subsequent brutal deaths of two policemen in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal - was spot on and morally correct in condemning criminals' actions.

It is time our society appreciates that police officials take an oath to serve them with dedication and commitment.

They do so mindful of the dangers and risk their lives to create a peaceful environment for all to enjoy.

It is heartbreaking when their families are left without breadwinners.

The challenge to eradicate this menace should be a challenge to all, irrespective of social, political or religious status.

A change of mindset is vital. We must accept that our men and women in blue are there to safeguard us. Treat them with respect and dignity.

Allow them space to carry out crime prevention by offering them the necessary support. It is wrong to portray them as enemies. It is every citizen's duty and their obligation to be custodians of the country's laws.

Condemn police killings in the strongest possible terms. Collective effort must be taken to identify and hunt down killers.

Your editorial is a step in the right direction. It is very encouraging that Sowetan is contributing positively to nation building by encouraging respect for the law.

Superintendent Piletji Sebola, SAPS spokesman, Pretoria
