Green Halloween celebrations await fans

The story goes that the Celts believed that the dead and the living existed simultaneously during winter.

Somehow they figured this was something to celebrate, which they did on October 31 in the Samhain festival.

But once the Catholic Church gained power in the 800s the celebration took on a more Christian feel. All Hallows Eve was celebrated on November 1 to honour dead saints.

That's all good and well but this year the best place to be, without fail, is the Brightwater Commons Annual Halloween Celebration.

The theme for this year is "Going Green". All green costumes are more than welcome. Come dressed as a bug, Shrek or a frog and dress the kids as leaves. Push your creativity to the limit and make onlookers turn green with envy.

Both the young and young at heart are welcome to go trick-or-treating in the mall's stores and meet the costume characters that will be lurking in Brightwater Commons.

The fun begins at 5.30pm with the Mad Chef Magic Show. The stage will come alive with acrobats, plate spinning, fire and chain-saw juggling, to name but a few.

At 7pm you are invited to strut your stuff in the Halloween parade, which ends with an awesome fire show.

The night culminates in a fancy dress competition from 8pm. Admission is R25 a car.
