President gives awards to 20 top achievers in SA

Sports stars and a singer were among those honoured at a National Orders ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria when President Kgalema Motlanthe bestowed the country's highest accolades on more than 20 recipients.

The Order of Mendi in gold went posthumously to Nomava Shangase for using her medical skills to help exiled freedom fighters.

The order of Ikhamanga in silver was received by rugby players Bryan Habana and Percy Montgomery for their contribution to the game.

The order of Mapungubwe in gold was awarded to Doris Lessing for literature and contributing to the elimination of apartheid.

Vengalil Krishnan Krishna Menon posthumously received the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo for contributing to the fight against apartheid.

Singer Sibongile Khumalo and vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo were also honoured, as was author Lauretta Ngcobo.

Composer George Mxadana also received the Order of Ikhamanga in silver. - Sapa
