Polish your scriptwriting skills

Do you fancy yourself a budding scriptwriter for television and film - but you have never had an opportunity to fine-tune those dormant writing skills?

If the answer is yes, you now have an opportunity to learn how to polish those skills, thanks to the recent launch of a new scriptwriting course.

The course, which is the brainchild of the Soweto Writers Centre (SWC) and is supported by the National Film and Video Foundation, is presented at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto Campus.

The first of these courses started on Saturday. Aspiring writers who have written concepts or stories for film and television are invited to attend.

The seminar will deal with a host of creative and legal rights elements in the film-making process, including concept development, treatment writing, pitching, proposal writing, copyright and contracts.

The seminar was organised by the SWC and is presented in collaboration with Indlela Entertainment, a legal and management training agency based in Johannesburg.

According to Basil Dube, the centre's director, the seminar will also be used to identify promising and talented writers who will be selected for an intensive writer development programme to be conducted by Duma Ndlovu, one of South Africa's most respected writers and the executive producer of Muvhango.

The centre, which is based at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto Campus, is now open to the general public from Wednesday to Saturday.
