About 500 traditional leaders in the Mopani district of Limpopo have broken away from the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) to form their own association.

They felt that Contralesa has been neglecting their interests in negotiations with the government.

The African Traditional Leaders Association was launched at a district forum at the Tivumbeni Multipurpose Community Centre in NkowaNkowa township, outside Tzaneen at the weekend.
