Nurturing a sense of cultural identity in children starts with positive steps, including socialising the tiny tots with relevant traditional playthings.
Leading the way is young entrepreneur Molemo Kgomo, who overcame the dilemma of raising her children on a diet of foreign culture play items including those of the Barbie and Bratz crazes.
Kgomo imported and later sold dark-coloured dolls, mainly at functions where black women congregate.
Currently manufactured overseas, the dolls are clothed by two women's groups with beadwork and traditional designs that are Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, Ndebele, Tsonga, Pedi and Swazi.
