Top sports administrator Nthebe Molope has thrown the cat among the pigeons by standing for the presidency of Volleyball South Africa.

The new leadership will be elected on November 29.

Molope has served as vice president of VSA since 2000. Prior to that, he was general secretary between 1998 and 2000.

He has been with the volleyball federation since the unity process in 1994 where he was selected development director.

Turby Reddy, the chief operations officer of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, has been president of VSA since its inception in 1994.

Some of the stakeholders involved in volleyball said they wanted the executive to represent the demographics of the country.

"We also need to see transformation at the top, otherwise volleyball will continue to suffer in the villages and townships," said one provincial leader.

The humble Molope said the decision to stand for the position of president was taken after he was approached by several influential stakeholders in the sport.

"There are a number of provinces and certain individuals who approached me to stand for the position. I gave it due consideration and agreed to stand.

"I can't mention the names of those people at this stage because there is intense lobbying for various positions taking place in all the provinces of VSA.

"It is important that we need to revive volleyball, it was one of the most popular sporting codes at schools in black residential areas," added Molope.

Molope is one of the people credited for forming a volleyball structure in Soweto before he went to Mafikeng to further his studies.

In 1995, Molope made history by being appointed the head coach of the South African team to the All Africa Games in Zimbabwe.
