Liverpool sink blues

LONDON - Xabi Alonso was Liverpool's hero as they went three points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League by ending the Blues' 86-match unbeaten league run at Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 win.

Alonso struck in the 10th minute on Sunday when his shot was deflected past goalkeeper Petr Cech by Chelsea full-back Jose Bosingwa, whose side came into this match as leaders on goal difference.

Just after the hour mark, Alonso almost made it 2-0 when his free kick from the edge of the box hit the foot of the post with Cech beaten.

This defeat, Chelsea's first in more than four years in the league at home, was also their first in 13 matches since Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari took charge of the west London club.

For Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez it was a first away win during his four-year tenure against one of their major three rivals - Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United - which had seen Liverpool garner just two points and score four goals in 12 matches against them.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan and former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho was up to his old tricks again on Saturday, toying with the Italian press and claiming he needs to become more Italian.

Mourinho was well known for his soundbites during a little more than three years in England.

He often provided the content for column inches with his outrageous claims.

The Italian press have not taken to him yet and were particularly outraged when he failed to turn up to a post-match press conference earlier in the season, sending his assistant Giuseppe Baresi instead.

And ahead of yesterday's visit of Genoa, he poked fun at the Italian way of doing things when refusing to divulge his formation for the match.

"I'm Italianising myself, I need to become more Italian, I'm also trying to become a nicer person," he said.

English Premier League Results:

Everton 1, Manchester United 1; Sunderland 2, Newcastle United 1; West Bromwich Albion 0; Hull City 3.
