Shame on the law enforcers who were caught allegedly taking bribes from desperate street traders. Their subsequent suspension is applauded.

As an ecumenical organisation that has been accompanying informal traders in the inner city and surrounding areas, we feel vindicated by the article.

When informal traders approached us and asked that we walk with them in their struggles, we observed with distress the conditions under which they operated.

This prompted conducting a survey and its findings were shared with traders and the public.

Featuring prominently in the findings were unbecoming behaviour of law enforcers; confiscation of stock by Metro Police; un-availability of trading sites; corruption of Metro Police; ambiguous trade regulations and their arbitrary enforcement as well as a disregard for traders in making an input to policies that affect them.

Traders were also concerned about the confiscation of their stock and the manner in which this was done. The impounded stock was not kept in secure and hygienic places.
