Thobile Ntola, a science teacher and principal of Chubekile Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape, is the new South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) president.

Ntola, who was deputy president of Sadtu, was elected unopposed on Tuesday at Sadtu's national general council in Pretoria.

He replaced Willy Madisha who was also president of the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) and expelled for bringing the federation and its affiliate, Sadtu, into disrepute.

Madisha has since thrown his weight behind the ANC splinter group led by Mosiuoa Lekota and Mbhazima Shilowa.

The disgruntled ANC members plan to launch a political party early next month.

Ntola, who was Madisha's sworn enemy, presided over Sadtu's disciplinary hearing that found Madisha guilty.

Ntola and Sadtu's secretary-general Thulas Nxesi were alleged to have masterminded Madisha's expulsion.
