The fate of two police officers accused of setting dogs on handcuffed hijack suspects will be known in two weeks.
The officers have 14 days to submit reports to provincial police Commissioner Hamilton Ngidi on what happened that day and plead their case on why they should not be suspended.
Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge yesterday said the case was being probed internally and that the commissioner had yet to decide whether to suspend the officers, who cannot be named until they are charged.
The two are senior officers at the Umkomaas police station.
A report compiled by the independent complaints directorate (ICD) on the incident has also been sent to Ngidi.
The directorate has called for the immediate suspension of the two officers. It will also pursue possible criminal charges against the two.
The officers were identified in less than 48 hours after cellphone footage of the incident was televised.
In the footage police were seen standing with folded arms and laughing while dogs attacked the suspects.
"According to the victims, they were instructed by officers to get out of the hijacked vehicle and they complied," ICD spokesman Tabisa Ralo said.
"They were handcuffed and taken to a sugar cane field where the dogs were set on them."
