Mama Angel sponsored a youth career guidance workshop last month.

Matriculants are about to write their final exams and many do not have a clear idea of which profession to pursue.

The Sowetan teamed up with the Youth Alive Ministries (YAM) to host the workshop in Dube Village in Soweto on September 28. About 50 people attended.

The YAM is a nonprofit organisation that runs Christian community projects. It was founded in the early 60s and trains the youth to be future leaders.

It was very active in collecting clothes and other necessities for refugees during the recent xenophobic attacks in Gauteng.

The YAM has produced many leaders who are  prominent  in their professions.

The workshop covered politics, sports, business, entertainment, performing arts and culture.

Speakers were Adelaide Matlejwane, a businesswoman who is on the board of the YAM, Rams Ramashia, chairman of BP South Africa, and Jerry Mofokeng the well-known actor and director.

Matlejwane, who rose from a cadet to owning her own recruitment agency, spoke about the difficulty of rejection when applying for a first job.

Mofokeng said the youth should have a passion for their jobs. This would help them overcome obstacles and become successful.

Ramashia said, as a youth, he had had nothing and the deck was stacked against black students. But the youth today had equal opportunities and should use them to their advantage.

He advised young people not to follow fashionable careers, but to rather choose careers in which they could excel.

Khethiwe Marketing gave practical information to youths on how to access marketing plans and finance to go into business.

Mama Angel provided T-shirts and caps, stationery and a finger lunch for the participants.

YAM organisers Langa Klaaste and Silindile Tshabalala said: "Your help and input are much appreciated and cherished.

"We extend our gratitude to Sowetan's Mama Angel for your effort and involvement in our community work.

"Thank you very much."
