A vicious storm that swept away houses in the Sekhukhune district has left families destitute and begging for food and shelter.
Seven days after 37 houses and 92 roofs where blown away by a storm, some villagers are still without food and shelter.
The storm did not only destroy their houses, it also rendered groceries useless after they were soaked. Most of the roads leading to the town and internal roads in the villages were also damaged.
The R37 from Burgersfort to Polokwane was also destroyed, making it difficult for motorists to pass through.
Sowetan yesterday received calls from disgruntled residents who accused the municipality of being very slow to help them.
"We have no food, shelter and clothing. Our children are also unable to go to school because their books and clothes were also washed away by the rain," said a Mashantana village resident
Greater Tubatse municipality spokesman Kubane Tolo said villages that were hard hit by the storm are Mashantana, Bothashoek, Praktiseer and Kutullo in the Sekhukhune district of Limpopo.
Tolo said the municipality had already provided food parcels, blankets and tents to some of the affected families.
He said roads in the villages had also been re-gravelled so that bakeries, furniture, essential services and municipal vehicles could reach the intended beneficiaries.
Teachers at the Tlhakauma Primary School in Berg en Dal were forced to conduct lessons under trees after their school was blown away by the storm.
