From January next year, South Africa will switch to a new method of measuring inflation, which is likely to result in a lower statistical figure - but not necessarily a slowdown in actual price rises.

From January next year, South Africa will switch to a new method of measuring inflation, which is likely to result in a lower statistical figure - but not necessarily a slowdown in actual price rises.

Statistics SA says the consumer price index (CPI), which measures monthly changes in prices for a range of consumer products, is being changed to bring it in line with international standards.

The key elements of the CPI are the products and services that are measured, and the "weight" that is attached to each.
