South Africa has lost dance icon Abel Boy Jacob "Mad Joe" Sennakgomo who died at his Thokoza home on Sunday.

"Mad Joe" helped popularise tap dance in South Africa. But, the past few years have reportedly not been kind to "the father of tap dance".

He disappeared from his popular haunts in the Jozi CBD and was reportedly down and out.

"He died on Sunday. He had been ill for sometime," said his eldest son "Mad Joe Junior".

Sennakgomo will be buried on Saturday at the Thokoza cemetery. The funeral service will be held at St Phillip's Anglican Church on Mnguni Street, Thokoza, at 10am.
