Unique insurance

For just more than R20 a month drivers can now insure themselves and any passenger traveling in their car against personal injury or death.

For just more than R20 a month drivers can now insure themselves and any passenger traveling in their car against personal injury or death.

Payout is completely independent of, and has no effect on, any other insurance claim or the Road Accident Fund, according to Hollard Insurance, which launched Enroute In-Car, the first insurance cover of its kind in South Africa.

The cover was launched in partnership with Flexible Accident & Sickness Acceptances (Fasa).

Its uniqueness and advantage to South Africans, according to Mike Do Vale, MD of Fasa, is that unlike ordinary personal accident policies, which cover specific individuals, this insurance is linked to a certain car and protects anyone traveling in that vehicle.

Stef Theofanidis, divisional head at Hollard, says South Africa's terrible road accident rate, cultural make-up and lack of protection for so many, made this cover possible.

Fasa's Do Vale explains further: "The vehicle itself doesn't even have to be insured for the driver and passengers to be covered by EnRoute and it can be used for domestic or business purposes.

Another advantage is that no lawyers are needed to claim on behalf of the victims because claims are handled directly by the companies.

For R20,54 a month death and permanent disability victims can each be awarded R25000, while temporary disability gets R500 a week up to 52 weeks with R10 000 paid for medical expenses.

"Higher levels of payout are available to those who choose to go for a higher premium," Theofanidis says.

The insurance is in force throughout South Africa as well countries such as Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana and Namibia.
