It has become quite standard for those in government and who speak on its behalf to issue the predictable "we will investigate" as a form of ensuring that the media gets off their backs.

It has become quite standard for those in government and who speak on its behalf to issue the predictable "we will investigate" as a form of ensuring that the media gets off their backs.

Oftentimes, unless an interested member of the public or the media is relentless, the promise to get to the bottom of the story is the end of the discussion, with cronies or political buddies getting away with all sorts of abuse.

It is in this context that we therefore commend the actions of the Johannesburg Metro police to immediately suspend four of their members that the Sowetan exposed last Friday taking bribes from hapless hawkers.

We hope this tendency for swift action will become the standard.
