A 20-year-old woman was raped at a taxi rank in Newcastle on Sunday evening.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the victim laid a complaint.

Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela said it appeared that the victim and suspect were part of a group at Paruk Park before he led her to the taxi rank.

"The victim was raped in a dark area of the taxi rank," he said. "She was able to summon the police and the suspect was arrested by dog unit members at the scene."

Magudulela warned women to be more vigilant.

"It appears the suspect lured the woman from a nearby park. We are investigating a rape case and the man is expected to appear in court soon."

Meanwhile, also in Newcastle, a 20-year-old man was stabbed to death after an argument with a 16-year-old on Sunday night .

"The suspect stabbed the victim in the chest. The victim was rushed to hospital where he later died," Magudulela said.

He said police on patrol noticed a scuffle between two men and went to investigate.

"On arrival at the scene the victim had already been stabbed. The suspect was arrested."
