Police have urged people not to take the law into their own hands.
This comes after incensed Buffelsdraai residents at Verulam, on the north coast of Durban, ran amok and beat to death Gcinani S'mamane, and viciously assaulted his brother, S'thembiso S'mamane, on Sunday afternoon.
Captain Mandla Khumalo said the incident happened after Gcinani, S'thembiso and a third suspect allegedly assaulted and stabbed to death S'bhokwe Khweshube.
He said Khweshube was "skinned from the chest to the top of his head".
Khumalo said no arrests have been made in both incidents.
"We appeal to residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands because by so doing, they are also committing a crime. We will thoroughly investigate and make arrests."
He said police were investigating a case of double murder.
"One murder case is against S'thembiso and his accomplice for allegedly killing Khweshube, and the second murder and attempted murder case is against the residents for assaulting the suspects," he said.
A resident, who did not want her name published, said Gcinani and S'thembiso are the sons of a local traditional healer.
She said residents went in search of the alleged suspects, and on finding them, they assaulted them.
"The residents went mad. The two men were carrying petrol, apparently because they wanted to set the body alight."
S'mamane senior has reportedly left the area, fearing for his life.
