SA take on Barbados

Griqualand West centre court player Liezel Wium has been named captain of the Spar South African squad to play Barbados in a three-Test series in Cape Town next week.

Griqualand West centre court player Liezel Wium has been named captain of the Spar South African squad to play Barbados in a three-Test series in Cape Town next week.

Wium, 31, is one of the most experienced players in the national team, and has the additional advantage of having spent two years playing in the hotly contested netball league in New Zealand, one of the world's top netball countries.

"She also has an unbelievable work ethic, both on and off the court, " said national coach Carin Strauss.

The other players have a great deal of respect for her, and I think she is the ideal leader for the team.

"Being a mid-court player means that she is very involved in the game, and this can help her control the game," Strauss added.

Precious Mthembu, 23, of Ethekwini was named vice captain for the Challenge series.

"Precious doesn't have as much experience as Liezel, but this is a good opportunity for her to grow," said Strauss.

South Africa are ranked ninth in the world, while Barbados are ranked 11th. South Africa are favourites to win, but Strauss will not be happy with anything less than decisive victories.

"We beat them by about 20 goals in the world championships in New Zealand last year, and I want South Africa to maintain or even improve on that level," she said. - Sapa
