Former Mpumalanga Economic Empowerment Corporation executive officer, Ernest Khoza, and his wife Thoko were treated to a very special moment when their friends threw a surprise birthday party for his wife on Saturday.

The function in Waterkloof, Pretoria, was attended by Generations star Seputla Sebogodi, who is known as Kenneth Mashaba on TV, and soccer bigwigs Mazolman Skhosana and Alex Shoakane.

A family friend invited the couple to Hartbeespoort Dam where they were told that they were to go horse riding on Saturday morning. Other friends were preparing for the surprise party.

Khoza and his wife met with the friend at the dam but the friend made all sorts of excuses for not going horse riding and kept on delaying the couple until late in the afternoon.

The friend then asked the couple to take him to Waterkloof in their car.

It was only when guests welcomed them at the gate and shouted "surprise, surprise" that they cottoned on.

Sebogodi announced: "We are here to celebrate Sis Thoko's 40th birthday."

Later when Khoza was asked to respond he said he was overwhelmed that friends could be so wonderful.

"We are surprised; this whole arrangement was really unexpected," said Khoza.

His wife agreed that the party had taken them both by surprise.

"Your support means a lot to me," she said.

"I feel very humbled and honoured."
