Solomon Mahlangu High School scooped the inaugural Butityi Konki Schools Rugby's tournament title by beating Molly Blackburn 9-3 in a hard-fought final in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape on Saturday.

The tournament was bankrolled to the tune of R300000 by Butityi Konki, the managing director of BK Investment Holdings. He has pledged to double the sponsorship next season.

Only the score separated the two sides, who performed exceptionally well and kept an estimated crowd of 5000 on their toes with their intriguing attacking and defending, especially around tackles.

The game was equally balanced in the first half and the scoreboard was 3-3 at the break.

This was thanks to penalty kicks by Siyabulela Sonti from Mahlangu in the sixth minute, and Blackburn's Luthando Ntuthela in the 18th minute.

With everyone resigned to extra time, Phumzile Mbewu scored a brace of penalties in the 76th and 79th minutes, sending Mahlangu pupils into raptures.

The 19-year-old Mbewu from KwaNobuhle won the Player of the Tournament award and an allexpenses paid trip to London to watch the Springboks against England on November 22.
