The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has warned disgruntled party members who plan to form a breakaway faction not to make the province their "hunting ground".

"Those who want to build a new organisation must rethink the matter and not even try to come and campaign in this province," provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said in Bhambayi, north of Durban, where the party welcomed more than 200 new members.

Mchunu said the ANC would stop any attempts at establishing a breakaway group led by Mosiuoa "Terror" Lekota and former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa, who is a convener of a planned national convention.

"If we hear that these people are coming here we will inform you so that we can go and attend their gathering to defend the ANC.

"I hear that in other provinces these people attack the ANC and we have to defend this organisation.

"Part of the ANC constitution calls on members to defend the party.

"We have no time for any organisation except the ANC," Mchunu said.

Meanwhile, the ANC suffered another blow yesterday when scores of its members from the Dullar Omar region in the Western Cape announced their resignations, while ANC big guns were in the province trying to stem the flow of support for the dissidents.

Lekota, Shilowa and former ANC councillor Mbulelo Ncedana were at the meeting in Phillipi when ANC members resigned.

Many people had been "unhappy for too long within the ANC", Ncedana said .

ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe said leaders like Lekota and Shilowa were cowards because they had failed to raise their concerns within the ANC when they had the platform to do so.

Shilowa and Lekota say the new ANC leadership under Jacob Zuma has veered away from the principles of the Freedom Charter
