I agree.

Quintiles 1 and 2 schools are already no-fee schools and soon quintile 3 schools will also be free. With notable exceptions, they have not delivered quality education. Quintile 4 and 5 schools continue for the most part to excel in the Senior Certificate exams. But they are under threat.

The left wing of the ANC has promised free education to all. What will that mean? Fewer teachers because SGBs will not be able to employ additional teachers?

An increase in resignations owing to the disappearance of top-ups for teachers who have extra responsibilities or deliver quality education? Larger classes? More disciplinary problems? Less individual attention for pupils? There will be an even greater exodus to independent schools or to other countries.

The DA proposes more autonomy, better incentives and rewards coupled with performance measurement to develop more good schools and good teachers. That is the way to deliver the quality education that this country so badly needs.
