Police have made a breakthrough and arrested five people, including a woman, in connection with the murder of an ANC branch official.
Yesterday morning the police arrested four men and a woman between the ages of 22 and 44.
Mfundisi Mkhize was shot dead on his way to work last Friday by unknown people in Umlazi's E-section.
He was the branch secretary of Ward 80 (Umlazi) in the eThekwini region.
Police spokesman, Superintendent Vincent Mdunge, said the suspects were arrested in three different sections of Umlazi.
The ANC described him as a hard-working activist in his area, who served the organisation with distinction.
"The two main suspects, who are believed to be hitmen, were arrested in T-section, two others in E-section and the fifth one in V-section," Mdunge said.
"At this stage we can safely say that two suspects are facing a murder charge while the other three are being charged with conspiracy to murder."
Mdunge said the killing seems to have been well planned and orchestrated.
"The motive is still unknown but we can say that it was a well-planned murder," he said.
All the suspects are expected to appear in the Umlazi magistrate's court today.
T-section, also known as Seventeen Men's Hostel, is a well-known IFP stronghold in Umlazi.
It is the area where four men were arrested for assaulting and forcing a woman to parade naked for wearing pants.
ANC eThekwini region spokesman James Nxumalo praised the police for working tirelessly to bring the alleged perpetrators to book.
Nxumalo said that if the police continued working like this, incidents of this nature would end.
"We commend the police for their sterling work in apprehending the suspects," Nxumalo said.
"We hope this will send a clear message to would-be perpetrators that the police will leave no stone unturned to arrest people who have no respect for law."
