Mamelodi Sundowns owner and president, Patrice Motsepe, put his foot in it this week and was quickly called to order.
The billionaire mining magnate surprised members of the Premier Soccer League's board of governors when - out of the blue - he called for the unopposed retention of Irvin Khoza as chairman at the next elections on November 8.
Motsepe, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, is said to have raised the issue after the board's meeting which concluded the matter of the R70 million payout to their sponsorship negotiating committee on Wednesday despite it not being on the agenda.
"We were shocked!" said a member who wished to remain anonymous while another said "I took that very personally".
The suggestion is said to have caught even Khoza by surprise and he had to sort the matter out.
"Khoza was surprised when the issue was raised and he pointed out that while he knew of Motsepe's intention, he had been invited to a meeting where it was discussed but he had nothing to do with it," said one member who also believed this was the wrong forum.
"Khoza handled the matter professionally before it could get out of hand," said one of our sources.
Though others believe Motsepe had jumped the gun, they had no problem with the suggestion. They pointed out that the timing and place were wrong.
"This matter was not even on the agenda, but after close of business Motsepe raised his hand under general only to come up with his proposal. We don't know why he did what he did but it was just not right for him to do that," said the source.
Others said they were also concerned that he seemed to confine himself only to the chairmanship and not any of the other positions on the league's executive committee.
