Hold on to your wallet

In the real world, where people have to work for a living, folks who get fired lose their jobs and their benefits.

In the real world, where people have to work for a living, folks who get fired lose their jobs and their benefits.

But this simple truth does not apply to the grubby world of politics.

Lawmakers that the ANC boots out from their posts will get a hefty cash "sweetener", paid by the taxpayers, if President Kgalema Motlanthe accepts the latest recommendations of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.

The proposed 11percent salary hikes will also be backdated to April 1, boosting already generous pensions and other payouts.

Let's make this clear: the ANC decides to dump a horde of its representatives but goes on feeding at the public trough at our expense.

Ministers' salaries will rise to R1612053, MPs' to R714618, with a "parliamentary allowance" of R120000.

The largesse spreads all around the system, including municipal councillors who will be paid R322899.

But most outrageous of all is how much these good people will get when they retire or otherwise lose their jobs.

MPs who work five years or less won't get a pension but a cash payout equal to 45percent of what they have snaffled from our wallets.

Wonder how miners, farmworkers and the tens of thousands of other honest workers who have lost their jobs feel about this?

Dear President Motlanthe, show us you haven't utterly lost touch with your people and veto this nonsense.
