Eleven senior ANC members in the Western Cape have resigned to support breakaway party man Mosiuoa Lekota.

The 11 announced their resignation saying they would help to organise the national convention initiated by Lekota.

The group includes the leader of the ANC caucus in the Cape Town City Council, Mbulelo Ncedana, and former Saldanha Bay mayor Onel de Beer.

Some of the other prominent ANC members who resigned yesterday are Ndithini Tyhido, Nono Mtakatya, Vuyisile Schoeman, and Clifford Sitonga.

The group, which claims to have the support of at least another 50 ANC councillors in Cape Town, expected more resignations.

The ANC's provincial secretary Sipho Kroma described the group as a "small group of disgruntled members who have spurned the hand of reconciliation and friendship offered by the ANC".
