The Nedbank Soweto Marathon presents a golden opportunity to the City of Johannesburg to showcase some of the rapid developments as part of the legacy projects for the 2010 World Cup.
This is according to acting executive mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, at the launch of the 17th yearly Soweto Marathon in the township yesterday.
This year's edition of the marathon, which is known for attracting runners from as far afield as Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Germany and Russia, will take place on November 2.
"Among the many features to note along the route are the legacy projects that are starting to take shape as part of our hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup," said Tau.
"Just past the halfway mark in Orlando West the runners will pass the Nelson Mandela Museum on Vilakazi Street and shortly afterwards the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
"The City of Johannesburg is actively promoting the growth of tourism and in the marketing of our unique heritage sites such as Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson Museum and [Walter Sisulu Freedom Square] Kliptown."
Leonard Chuene, Athletics South Africa president, commended the City of Johannesburg under the leadership of mayor Amos Masondo, for joining residents of Soweto in adopting the marathon."
Big names expected to run include Farwa Mentoor, Josia Thugwane, Tsotang Maine, Mamorallo Tjoka, George Mofokeng, Johannes Kekana, Poppy Mlambo, Shadrack Hoff and Norman Dlomo.
