Boxing is a funny sport. So crazy that brothers can be pitted against each other, either for a worthless belt or for a meagre purse, while promoters reap huge financial rewards.
In 2001 neighbours in Limpopo and bosom friends Philip Ndou and Cassius Baloyi almost killed each other for a belt.
Ndou from Thohoyandou outpointed his friend from Giyani in the clash at Carnival City in Ekurhuleni and that ended their cordial relationship.
In 2005 Baloyi fought his other neighbour Isaac Hlatswayo for the IBO lightweight strap. Hlatswayo outpointed Baloyi.
The result was the same: animosity.
Recently Peter Mashamaite and Khaphathe Mphambanyeni brutalised each other for the SA middleweight belt. Mashamaite won that bloody slugfest within the distance.
These fights were staged hundreds of kilometres away from their homes. To make matters worse they did not fight under their terms financially but were paid what promoters wanted to pay them.
This Saturday night, Park Station will host yet another Limpopo derby between Godfrey Nzimande and Jasper Seroka, both come from Phalaborwa.
Nzimande's national junior lightweight belt will be at stake as he bids for a first defence.
Coincidentally these two fighters, who are based in Gauteng, will make their debuts under new trainers: Nzimande under Nick Durandt and Seroka under Rob MacLeod.
Their fight will be presented by promoter Pat Molefe under the banner of Rainbow Promotions. This is an intriguing fight between two talented performers.
Molefe was not available for comment regarding their remuneration.
There will be five more bouts that will also be televised live by SuperSport from 7pm.
