Steinhoff Cup runneth over with new entries

Another six horses were nominated for the R2million Steinhoff International Summer Cup at the second-entry stage this week.

Another six horses were nominated for the R2million Steinhoff International Summer Cup at the second-entry stage this week.

This brings the total number of entries for the Grade 1 to 36.

The final entry stage for the race is at 11am on Monday November 3 and weights will be issued the same day.

The final field of 18 runners plus two reserves will be announced on Monday November 17.

The Summer Cup is the headline event on a mega race day that contains four other feature races and a four-race International Jockeys' Challenge, in which six South African riders will take on six of the best international riders.

The six additional entries are the Kumaran Naidoo-trained Dynamite Mike and Preach Connection; E-Fuel from the yard of Andre Kirsten; Dave Goss' El Padrino; Tony Rivalland's London Guest; and Gilded Minaret, who is trained by champion Mike de Kock.

Gilded Minaret, rated a classy 105, is a versatile filly who has won from 1400m to 2000m.

KwaZulu-Natal runner El Padrino, rated 101, will face his toughest test to date if he is in the final line-up.

A four-time winner, he made his first trip to the Highveld for the recent Emerald Cup in which he ran creditably in finishing third behind Alimony.

Dynamite Mike is a talented individual on his day, while Preach Connection has reeled off three more successes since opening his account early this year.

Andre Kirsten's E-Fuel has a record of seven wins and 14 places from 26 runs and is well above average, while lightly raced London Guest, another KwaZulu-Natal-based horse, won the Durban July Consolation over 2200m at Greyville and has only finished unplaced once in winning five of his 12 career starts.

The event will be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 29 November.
