Few can dispute that Helen Zille, the mayor of Cape Town, has become one of the most recognisable faces in the local political landscape.

Her robust leadership style has undoubtedly earned her the grudging respect of her political adversaries.

On that note we would like to join fellow South Africans in congratulating her on scooping the 2008 World Mayor Prize awarded by City Mayors, an international urban affairs think-tank.

That said, eyebrows will have been raised at City Mayors' assertion that Zille's "only equals in South Africa are Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela".

Quite an exaggeration but one that should not be allowed to come in the way of a proud moment.
