A 54-year-old man is recovering in hospital after Soshanguve residents beat him up for cutting copper cables, Pretoria police said.

"The mob caught him cutting cables with two neighbours aged 19 and 20," Captain Solly Marind said.

The cousins fled, leaving the older man behind. Some people chased the cousins and caught them while others assaulted the older man, causing serious head injuries.

The cousins were taken to the police and are in custody.

"As soon as the older man recovers, all three will appear in court," Marind said. - Sapa
