LOC gets help from soccer heavyweights

The Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (Grulac) has joined forces with the Local Organising Committee to promote the 2010 World Cup.

The Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (Grulac) has joined forces with the Local Organising Committee to promote the 2010 World Cup.

As part of the campaign, the South African missions of Grulac have adopted schools in black residential areas to assist with soccer development projects.

The missions are in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Louis Taylor, the LOC's schools campaign manager, said the event formed part of the 2010 My School Adventure campaign.

The 2010 My School Adventure is a new development soccer tournament used by the LOC and government to market the 2009 Confederations Cup and the World Cup.

Eighteen schools will take part in this tournament that caters for Under-13 pupils.

"These embassies have adopted schools that participate in a one-day tournament and each school represents one of the Grulac member countries," said Taylor.

"The event is a festival of soccer activities, ballerinas and flamenco dancers, which is coordinated by the respective embassies.

"Once a year, all the Grulac member countries get together to celebrate with the schools adopted by the embassies.

"We [LOC] are sponsoring the event and are excited to be part of it, especially considering that it also helps in the development of soccer.

"The Grulac countries have won the World Cup nine times between themselves, five of them have hosted the tournament.

"As part of the deal with the Grulac countries, they help us to disseminate information about the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."
