Robbers exchanged gunfire with the police and hijacked a car at gunpoint in one night at a shopping complex this week.

The police were met first with a hail of bullets at the notorious Bushbuckridge shopping complex on Monday night after receiving information about a burglary.

They retaliated and wounded one of the robbers and arrested one, while three others ran away.

Hardly five minutes later two men jumped into the back of the security guards' bakkie and instructed them to drive to Acornhoek. The thugs shot and wounded one cop and pistol-whipped the other before running away.

The guards were taken to hospital. The police believe the two criminals who hijacked the guards might have been part of the group that ran away.

They said it was also possible that the two robbers had been on the road near the shopping centre while their colleagues broke into the supermarket. - Sowetan Reporter
