When Sunday World cartoonist Bethuel Mangena submitted his work portraying a power shift in the ANC after the Polokwane conference last December, he knew for sure he was sending in winning material.

Mangena was voted regional winner of the Vodacom Journalism Awards held in Johannesburg on Monday.

"The cartoon was one of those that when I finish drawing gives me a feeling of satisfaction," Mangena said. "Though the news that I had won took me by a surprise, I knew when I submitted it that it was winning material,"

The only downside was that he was unable to go to the podium when his name was called.

"I got a call from a colleague who was at the venue congratulating me, while I was driving around trying to locate the place.

"I wish I could have been there when my name was called out."
