The ANC in the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast region is reeling from shock after the murder of two prominent members in the region in less than a week.

Vusi Gumede was killed in Mtubatuba after he was hijacked in Empangeni on Thursday.

Yesterday morning Lucas Jiyane of Dlangubo in the uMlalazi municipality, outside Mpangeni, was shot dead by unknown men.

ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu described Jiyane (ward 34 branch chairman) as a rising star in his area and in the party.

"Our main worry is that the murders happened amid threats to a number of comrades in Melmoth and Eshowe," Mchunu said.

He said there appeared to be an orchestrated move to intimidate voters by eliminating leading ANC members in areas where the ANC is beginning to make inroads."

Mchunu said the party would do everything possible to work with the police to ensure that perpetrators were arrested.

"We call on the police to leave no stone unturned in investigating the Dlangubo murder and others in the area," he said.

"There is general suspicion that a large number of illegal firearms have been brought into some areas in the north, especially Esikhawini township.

"The ANC will do whatever it can to assist the police in arresting the perpetrators."
