The trial of axed Goodwood police station commander Siphiwo Hewana was postponed yesterday by the Parow magistrate's court.

Hewana, who is out on warning on charges of attempting to defeat the ends of justice and incitement to commit perjury, will appear again on February 23 next year.

Hewana is charged with putting a blood sample, taken from Tony Yengeni last year, into his desk drawer instead of locking it in a safe.

This was after Yengeni crashed his car and was arrested for drunken driving.

Because the blood sample was left in Hewana's desk drawer it was said to have been tampered with, so it could not be sent for forensic analysis.

Hewana was suspended without pay because of the charges he faced. He was dismissed after being found guilty at an internal hearing.

Hewana has maintained that he did not know that Yengeni's blood sample had been locked up in his desk drawer.
