A ranger at the Kruger National Park is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a lioness.

The incident happened when trail ranger Rudi Lorist and his colleagues, were returning to camp on Monday.

Kruger managing executive officer Bandile Mkhize said: "The ranger noticed the lioness had cubs with her, and gave her a wide berth.

"But she continued to advance on the group and the ranger fired off two warning shots."

The lioness attacked Lorist. She mauled him, biting both his forearms and scratching him on various parts of the face and body, before letting go.

A helicopter took Lorist to the Nelspruit Medi-Clinic where he is recovering.
