The fight against crime will always be a futile exercise as long as we have corrupt police officers in our midst.

The fight against crime will always be a futile exercise as long as we have corrupt police officers in our midst.

One of them is Sean Twala, a former police inspector in Johannesburg, who was jailed for 10 years last week for fraud, bribery and extortion. He, together with a colleague, is facing more charges of corruption and intimidation.

The police are upholders of the law and it is shocking that some of them are involved in the very activities they are expected to fight against.

Twala's crimes have obviously tarnished the image of the police service and have also dented the public's confidence in law enforcers.

We urge the Ministry of Safety and Security to screen their lot and root out the rotten apples.
