A man whose girlfriend left him for another man went crazy and shot her dead, wounded the new lover and then killed himself.

The drama unfolded on Wednesday night after the jilted boyfriend allegedly saw his ex-girlfriend walking up the stairs to her bedroom at the Eyethu Inn in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, with the other man.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the gunman approached the couple.

"He forced them into the bedroom at gunpoint and tied them up with ropes before shooting the woman in the head and the man in the chest," Khoabane said.

"He then shot himself in the head."

Khoabane said the boyfriend was recovering in hospital.

Police appeal to people with problems to seek counselling

He said the woman, who worked and lived at the inn, had allegedly ended her relationship with the boyfriend.

Khoabane urged members of the community who had domestic problems not to resort to violence but to seek counselling.

"Speak to social workers, pastors and elders in your communities," Khoabane said.

"These people can talk sense into would-be killers of lovers."

The deceased will be identified after their next of kin have been informed.
