Nearly half of Mpumalanga's residents think service delivery in the province stinks.

In fact, 49percent of people polled in a TNS research survey indicated their dissatisfaction with delivery.

This means that Mpumalanga's people are the unhappiest in South Africa when it comes to service delivery.

Thirty five percent of the respondents in "the province of the pioneering spirit" are extremely dissatisfied while 14percent are fairly so.

Other provinces where dissatisfaction was recorded in the 12-month survey are Northern Cape with 18percent and Free State with 19percent.

TNS director Neil Higgs said: "While not every municipality or local authority was necessarily visited, it is, nevertheless, possible to obtain a general idea of how people feel about service delivery at a provincial level .

"People were asked to rate their local municipality or local authority on a five-point scale that ranged from extremely satisfied to extremely dissatisfied.

"From this, by allocating points to each scale point, it is possible to calculate a score out of 10 that represents people's overall levels of satisfaction."

On the positive side, TNS said the results showed many people were fairly or extremely satisfied - 81percent in Northern Cape, 73percent in Free State, 63percent in Western Cape, 58percent in Eastern Cape, 57percent in KwaZulu-Natal, 55percent in Gauteng and North West, 35percent in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, 32percent.

Higgs said black people were more likely to give an extremely satisfied rating (21percent) compared with other race groups (between 10 and 13percent).

However, black people are also more likely to be extremely dissatisfied (13percent compared with an average of ninepercent for the other race groups).

Scores out of 10 do not differ greatly by race except for Indians who scored their local authorities at 5,6percent.
