A 35-year-old jilted police constable allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, threw her into an empty grave, fired shots at her and doused her with petrol.

Constable Sipho Oupa Nkabinde was arrested on Wednesday after the incident, which had taken place on Monday. His attorney handed him over to the police.

He was immediately charged and appeared in the Middelburg magistrate's court on nine charges, including two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, pointing a firearm, sexual assault, malicious damage to property and assault.

The case was postponed until Tuesday for a bail hearing.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said Nkabinde was demoted from sergeant to constable because of bad behaviour. He allegedly arrived at his ex-girlfriend's home on Monday evening .

He kicked the door down when she wouldn't open it

When the 28-year-old woman refused to open the door Nkabinde became furious and allegedly kicked it down.

"He drew a gun and threatened to shoot her and her boyfriend," Hlathi said. "The woman told him she did not love him and had moved on with her life."

The constable allegedly locked the boyfriend up in the room, dragged the woman to his vehicle.

"He drove off to the Phomolong Cemetery, where he pushed her into an empty grave and fired several shots at her but missed," Hlathi said.

"He left her in the grave and switched off the headlights, pretending to leave."

"After she had clawed her way out of the grave he bundled her into his car again and drove to a garage to buy petrol.

"He took her to her room, ordered her to pack her clothes and drove her to a secluded spot near the Mhluzi Stadium. There he doused her with petrol and tried to set her alight.

"She grabbed the matches and tried to run away. He caught her and took her to Nazareth township, saying he would kill her and her son."

After making her walk around naked he forced her into bed

Hlathi said Nkabinde drove her to his house "where he cooked food and allegedly made her parade around naked before ordering her to join him in bed".

Police rescued the woman after Nkabinde called a friend and told him that no one should worry about their whereabouts.

Nkabinde has been suspended.
