More and more domestic workers are being registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and it is now on a drive to get taxi owners and drivers signed up.
The Department of Labour announced yesterday that the fund had recorded a 35percent increase in its asset base, amounting to about R28billion. The funds are invested through the Public Investment Corporation.
It said the number of registered employers had increased to more than one million and seven million employees were now registered.
Boas Seruwe, the fund's commissioner, said: "It is particularly gratifying to note that more and more domestic workers are now registered with the fund - 663000 at the last count.
"We have also stepped up our efforts to ensure that taxi owners and their employees register with the fund," said Seruwe.
In the past financial year, the fund paid out nearly R3billion in benefits to more than 500000 beneficiaries.
It also increased the number of its labour centres from 32 last year to 57 this year.
Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana sent out a strong warning to those who employ foreigners as a way of avoiding government levies.
He said: "We will arrest those who exploit foreigners because it is against the international labour laws. What is good for a South African worker is equally good for a Zimbabwean worker".
