The first black dean of the Anglican Church in Botswana, and a political activist during the struggle against apartheid, has died in Potchefstroom after a long illness.
Dean Michael Mokhasi Molale, 76, of 257 Beyers Naude Street, died in the Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital in North West last Thursday.
Born into activism, Molale was the younger brother of the late senior member of the ANC Women's League, Kate Molale, who died in an accident while in exile in Tanzania in 1980. She was buried in Botswana.
Molale was born in Riverton where he received his primary education before his family moved to Sophiatown. He completed high school at Madibane High.
He enrolled for religious studies at the Rosettenville Ministry in Johannesburg in 1958 and began his service as a man of the cloth in Lichtenburg in 1962.
He later served in various ministries in South Africa, including Rockville in Soweto, Bloemhof and Sharpville in Vereeniging. Molale travelled abroad extensively to further his studies. He was appointed Dean of Anglican Church in Botswana in 1975.
As a member of the ANC he helped many young activists who left the country to join the ranks of the liberation movement in fighting against the apartheid regime.
It was during his visit to South Africa in 1978 that he was arrested and detained at John Vorster Square for more than a week.
After completing his mission in Botswana he returned to South Africa and worked at in the Department of Foreign Affairs until his retirement.
During his days in Soweto he coached the Rockville Hungry Lions Football Club.
Molale is survived by his widow Joyce Mmasana, four daughters, a son and 14 grandchildren.
He will be buried at the local cemetery tomorrow morning.
The funeral service will be held at Tsogong Cathedral in Ikageng, Potchefstroom.
