In an effort to address the ongoing violence and crime at KwaZulu-Natal schools, the education department will host a one-day safety summit in Pietermaritzburg today.

Education department spokesman Mbali Thusi said academics, researchers, anti-crime experts and other stakeholders will provide the department with "in-depth knowledge, expertise and practical experience".

Safety and security at schools has become a concern as incidents of violence, robbery, vandalism and killings pose a threat to both pupils and teachers.

Schools without a security system always havetheir computers, desks, books and other study materials stolen, especially during holidays.

"Schools have become soft targets for criminals, and other acts of violence are committed within school premises," said Thusi.
